ABOUT DENNIS
BORN AND RAISED IN NEW YORK CITY'S HARLEM, in the “Sugar Hill” neighborhood of Hamilton Heights as a 5th generation Harlemite, Moore and his brother Maurice had front row seats to colorful personalities across and beyond the arts. The intersection of arts and culture, regardless of geography or ethnicity, always attracted him. Early in life Moore developed a broad culturally cosmopolitan perspective on life and art, mostly due to the unique multicultural mix of Harlem during his formative years between the 1950s and mid-70s. These 20-plus years were culturally, artistically, socially, economically and politically pivotal for Harlem. He affirms, "Most people don't know this Harlem. I was lucky to have lived it, and learned a lot from it. I truly believe Harlem in this period was a template of what we know about Afromerican global culture now in the 21st century."
THROUGH HIS PARENTS, RELATIVES, and mentors, he engaged a constellation of gifted Harlem artists, skilled tradesmen, political activists, astute educators at City College of New York, militant activists, thought leaders, stylish empowered ladies, public officials, colorful hustlers, tough gentleman gangsters, wise Irishmen, Italian elders, Jewish wise men, far wiser women, The Last Poets, plus nearby Rock & Roll music artists performing at the nearby Apollo Theater — all associated with his very engaged quintessential Harlemite father. Everything in his life informs the neoabstract paint-sculpting he imagines, as well as his overall creative process.
HIS OVERALL FAMILY and active community life was a dynamic mix of cultural and creative expression, plus the continuous rhythm of 1950s-80s social and political changes that continue to be engaged — across and far beyond Dennis Moore's truly diverse, multiethnic, predominantly Afromerican, Afrolatin and Afrocaribbean Harlem. The confluence of the new musical arts of Doo Wop, Rock & Roll, Rhythm & Blues, Cool Jazz, Rock, early Funk, Spoken Word poetry as an origin of Hip Hop culture, Black urban fashion and social activism across New York City — plus several abstract art styles — stimulated and opened new artistic possibilities for him.
MOORE ALSO ASSERTS, because of Harlem's connected cultural and ethnic diversity, "I definitely believe I was born and grew up in the right place and time, around a variety of very interesting, creative and influential people." His art reflects it — while making no distinctions in the neoabstract artistic matrix of art, science, social, political, technological, spiritual, futurism, metaphysical, and global Afrodiaspora concepts . . .
CREATING PICTURES WITH UNCONSCIOUS THOUGHTS — BECAUSE "THERE IS NO BOX"
MOORE'S HARLEM COMMUNITY WAS A VISUAL MENAGERIE and narrative that powered his childhood artistic palette and creative passion. This durable cultural foundation enabled his adult professional years in graphic design and editing for various banking, public relations, marketing, news media and US federal government entities — plus six years as a radio news journalist, editor and producer. His earlier military service provided critical extra action skills, fluid strategies, beyond-the-box critical thinking, situational awareness, high focus, and tactical improvisation that Moore still uses in conceiving art and creating it — a highly cherished skill set within his artistic prism, creative process and life philosophy: "There is no box" — as used in his neoabstractions.
FROM AFRO-AMERICA, FRANCE, AFRICA, ASIA, NATIVE AMERICA and other world cultures, Moore draws deep inspiration from authenticity and originality in the culture of their creative legacies. "Many times I spend hours immersed in books about the fine arts and cultures of Afromerica, Africa, France, Asia, and ancient cultures across the Americas. They engage and push me to go creatively further." Therefore, Moore and his neoabstracts are influenced by a global panorama of cultures and visual concepts — particularly in his unconscious mind as he creates through paints, structures, and "beyond the box" neoabstract dimensional paint sculpting.
ARTISTICALLY INDULGED by his parents and relatives — especially his culturally avid mother from Savannah, Georgia — Moore's attraction to creativity was affirmed at 5 years old on the first day in public school, around the corner at PS 186 by his kindergarten teacher Norma Nurse. She immediately recognized the ability to academically engage him more through arts and crafts. From that day onward, art and being creative were a huge part of his journey of discovery, critical thinking and overall academic achievements. Nurturing his early neoabstract art skills — affirming creatively and personally that "boxes don't exist" — became one of many outcomes two decades later. Being born hyper-visual for color, texture, depth, rhythm, sound, geometry and design also helped. To Moore, creating has always been a spiritual and multisensory experience — in analog, dimensional, digital, virtual, and vibrational spectrums . . .

HARLEM'S SOCIAL RHYTHM, INTELLECTUAL LIFE and eternal ethos still informs and inspires Dennis Moore and his artistic aesthetics — within Harlem, across life, and on several global journeys of discovery. The globally influential Harlem that Moore grew from remains a multiethnic cultural mosaic with a distinct world renown Afromerican legacy and creativity. In Harlem to Los Angeles, from Paris to Tokyo and beyond, Moore engages many that recognize Harlem's creative brand. He remains fully secure about his roots and artistic vision — specifically and substantially in his neoabstract art, photography and writing. Dennis will always aesthetically, artistically, creatively, intellectually and spiritually affirm: "There is no box."
